Applying for our salaried and unsalaried routes
What are we looking for?
In order to apply for a place on our teacher training programmes, you must have the following qualifications:
- A UK honours degree classed at 2:1 or above, or a recognised international equivalent. For secondary programmes, this must be relevant to the subject you are planning to train to teach.
- Excellent GCSE and A Level qualifications (all GCSE and A Level equivalent qualifications should be put on your application).
- If you studied outside of the UK, you should visit the National Academic Recognition Information Centre (NARIC) website to find out whether your qualifications are of an equivalent level to UK GCSEs, A levels and an undergraduate degree. You will need to obtain a NARIC Statement of Comparability to evidence this prior to your application.

The right person for the training programme will:
- Have excellent academic qualifications and subject knowledge;
- Have excellent communication skills;
- Be very organised, energetic and self-directed;
- Be committed to the wider school life and willing to engage in a range of extra-curricular activities;
- Safeguard and promote the welfare of children.
Duties and Expectations
Trainees on our teacher training programmes will be expected to:
- Teach, to an outstanding level, all years, abilities and qualifications;
- Deepen the scholarly nature of both the subject you are teaching and the policies and values of your school;
- Play a central role in your subject area, including contributing to workshops, extension programmes, competitions, trips, open days, prep, and so on;
- Make a vital contribution to the efficient running of your department, including setting and marking examinations, assisting in moderation of coursework, and undertaking administrative and other tasks, as directed by your Head of Department;
- Enhance the quality of teaching and learning in your subject area and the wider Trust through sharing resources and good practice, lesson observations, collaborative teaching, mentoring and active participation in CPL/INSET days.
HOW TO APPLY
- Identify whether you would like to do a salaried or unsalaried route by reading the 'Routes on offer' page on this website, speaking to our advisers using the contact details on our website or attending a webinar.
- Visit the DfE Teacher Training search function through the ‘apply’ page on the Get into Teaching website. You will find a link to this on our website. Use this to search for available programmes through ‘Future Teacher Training' or visit the 'courses on offer' page for a full list of courses.
- Apply through UCAS Teacher Training or Gov.uk's Apply service. Which service you choose may depend on the other providers (you can put down three in total) so it is worth identifying which providers you would like to apply for before starting your application. It is up to you which service you use, and it does not affect your application to choose one over the other.
- Complete the different sections of your application, and enter your chosen course as one of your choices at the end of the application form. You can find this by visiting the section 'courses on offer'.
You Will Need
Before applying you will need the following information:
- Contact details
- All relevant qualifications (including all GCSEs, A Levels, and a breakdown of your degree topics)
- Personal statement (should show high level of attention to detail, and reflect your passion for your subject)
- School/Work experience – Please ensure you include all your work experience, as any large gaps in your work history will need to be explained.
When composing your personal statement make reference to the person specification and expectations listed above, and ensure that you read it through thoroughly before submitting.
Two referees’ details
You also need to provide two references. These should be:
- One professional, someone who can comment on your character and suitability as a teacher.
- One academic, e.g. a current or recent tutor (If you have not been to university in the last 5 years, you may prefer to use a second professional referee).
