Routes On offer

We have a number of different routes to becoming qualified:

There are two different types of qualifications.

Qualified Teacher Status: A professional qualification that is assessed through practical experience gained during your time on placement. It enables you to teach in England and develop your career.

Post Graduate Certificate in Education: An academic qualification that is assessed through assignments by our university partner.

It is important to understand the qualifications on offer for each route. Please click on each drop down to find out more about each route:

Unsalaried (Tuition Fee Route)

This route is our traditional and popular route to gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and the Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). It is important that you have suitable qualifications and curriculum knowledge for this route. It would be beneficial to have gained some experience in the classroom, but it is not a requirement. Applicants must meet all our eligibility criteria.

This route is available for those who wish to teach at Primary or secondary level, and is offered in a range of secondary subjects. Applicants should find the appropriate course here, and submit their application through either UCAS Teacher Training or the DfE’s ‘Apply’ Service.

If successful, you will train for one year and gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and the Post Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE). You will be based full-time in school, teaching a small number of classes from the beginning. You will receive lots of support through mentor meetings, training, observations and support with planning and assessments to aid your development as a trainee teacher.

Applying for this route

Check the courses we have in the section called 'Courses on offer'. Check the course codes carefully, as some courses may be available for more than one route.

Use the guidance in the 'Making an Application' section to apply. Check the information carefully, and ensure that you meet all the required criteria. Decide which service you are going to use to submit your application.

Overseas Applicants

Overseas applicants from non-EU countries should note that we are not able to offer sponsorship. The right to remain/citizenship is required in order to undertake this route.

EU applicants should live in the UK before applying, and should have, or obtain before starting their training, 'settled' or 'pre-settled' status. The type of status you have or are able to obtain will depend on the length of time you have lived in the UK.

Financial entitlements for this route, outlined below, are not guaranteed for overseas applicants.

Finance for this route

Many subjects have extremely competitive bursaries, and tuition fee and maintenance loans are available to cover the cost of your £9,250 tuition fee. There are also a small number of rooms available for applicants moving to London. You can read more about this in the finance section.

Applicants on this route also have the opportunity to apply for the highly competitive Future Teach Scholarship. Applicants wishing to apply for the scholarship will need to also submit a CV and covering letter in addition to their UCAS/Apply application, before they can be considered.

Salaried route (Teaching Apprenticeship)

This is a salaried route towards Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a Post Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE). On this route you will still receive the same access to high quality weekly training and mentoring but you will be expected to lead more lessons independently than on an unsalaried route due to being on a salary provided by your placement school. Prior classroom experience is welcome but not required. This salaried route is available for both primary and secondary phases and the tuition fee is covered by the apprenticeship levy, so the applicant does not have to pay. Applicants must meet all the eligibility criteria to apply for this route.

As this route is funded by your placement school, we are waiting to confirm vacancies before adding more courses for this route. Currently the only courses we have available in this route are: Chemistry, Chemistry, Physics and Maths.

You will train for one year and gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and the Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), and will be employed by your school for at least twelve months. As a salaried employee of the school, you would start on roughly a 70% timetable and could be asked to take on additional duties.

As with the tuition fee route, you will have a mentor in your school to guide and support you with your development as a trainee teacher.
